NatureScape is a project dedicated to enhancing urban sustainability by promoting environmental quality and human well-being. It focuses on implementing Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) through Urban Transformation Laboratories (T-Labs) — collaborative spaces where these solutions are co-developed, tested, and applied in real-world settings.
By integrating nature into urban environments — through green infrastructure, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable urban design — NatureScape contributes to building more resilient, healthy, and inclusive cities.
The project pioneers the integration of urban NBS across seven European cities: Oslo, Dublin, Riga, Milan, Lisbon, Lublin, and St. Gallen. It seeks to diversify green urban infrastructure through the creation of T-Labs, encompassing interventions such as green spaces, green roofs, living walls, and rain gardens.
At the core of NatureScape’s mission is a strong emphasis on the post-implementation phase of NBS. This includes a particular focus on stewardship — ensuring ongoing care and responsibility — and governance, involving inclusive policy-making and stakeholder collaboration. These elements are key to enhancing urban resilience, biodiversity, climate neutrality, and public health and well-being.
Through dynamic, community-led engagement, the NBS T-Labs aim to close critical knowledge gaps around post-implementation challenges, enabling the effective and sustainable integration of NBS into urban systems. NatureScape combines scientific research with active public participation, leveraging challenge-based methodologies, digital tools, and innovative governance models to foster long-term impact and co-evolution in cities.
